RESPECT FOR GAME OFFICIALS
  • The Executive of the Tri-County Soccer League requires each Club to communicate with their players, coaches, managers, and parents the need to stop the harassment of referees and linesmen across all the divisions, U6 through U18.
  • Clubs are responsible for providing game officials for each of their home games.  Each Club often tries to recruit referees from their player rosters.  Many of these "new" refs are in the 12 to 16-year age group and only last one or two years before quitting because of the pressure they feel from the sidelines.  Besides the damage to these individuals' confidence and self-esteem, it is a costly process for the Clubs.  It requires the cost of training a new crop of referees and the cost of hiring senior referees for older age groups because we have lost our homegrown talent.
  • Remember, these kids are effectively volunteers.  Without them, the games can't be played.  Also remember, with their training and annual refresher courses, most of them know more about the rules of the game than the average coach, manager, or parent.  Finally, remember they are human beings and, as such, make mistakes.  We all make mistakes!  Give them a break -- give them the benefit of the doubt.
  • Players, coaches, managers, and parents don't abuse adult referees because they know the consequences.  A referee can Red Card (eject) a player, coach, or manager from a game.  The referee can also demand that a parent leave the field environs if he/she deems that that person is causing a disturbance.  Failure to comply can result in the abandonment of a game and possible forfeiture of points for that parent's team.  The kids have, and will be encouraged to use, exactly the same powers.
  • The Tri-County Soccer League is committed to eliminating the harassment and abuse of game officials.   If necessary, the League's  Executive will provide for punishment which may range from forfeiture of games, point deductions, and, in severe cases, the suspension of offending Clubs.
  • Coaches and managers be warned -- make sure your players and their parents are aware that abuse and harassment will not be tolerated.  Let the game officials enjoy the game as well.
